5 Signs Your Pool Liner Needs Replacing

If your pool liner is looking a little worse for wear, you’re not alone. In the Dordogne climate, with hot summers and damp winters, liners naturally age and can start to fail after 10–15 years. Knowing when to replace your liner can save you money, prevent water loss, and keep your pool safe and enjoyable.

Here are five key signs it’s time to think about a new liner:

1. Visible Cracks, Tears or Holes

Even small splits can quickly turn into bigger problems. Once the liner’s surface is compromised, water can leak into the structure, leading to costly repairs. If you notice any rips, it’s usually more cost-effective to replace the liner than to patch it repeatedly.

2. Fading or Staining

The Dordogne sun is strong, and UV rays can bleach the colour from your liner over time. Chemical imbalances also cause staining and discolouration. While this may start as a cosmetic issue, a badly faded liner usually means the vinyl has weakened and is more likely to tear.

3. Wrinkles and Bubbles

If your liner no longer sits smoothly against the pool walls or floor, it could be a sign of water behind the liner, ground movement, or simply age. Wrinkles not only look unsightly but can make cleaning difficult and even create tripping hazards.

4. Water Loss That Isn’t Evaporation

Every pool loses some water naturally, especially in the summer heat. But if you find you’re topping up frequently, it’s worth checking for leaks. A worn liner is one of the most common culprits.

5. Age of the Liner

Most liners in France last around 10 years, depending on care and exposure. If yours is older, even if it looks fine now, it may be wise to plan a replacement before problems begin — especially if you rent your property or use your pool heavily.
